Studio Owner of the Month - Dan Weiniger - Home Video Studio - Westfield

Dan Weiniger Leaves Rat Race of High Finance for High Tech!

Dan Weiniger has worked in high finance at the American Stock Exchange, in high calories as the owner of two ice cream shops and now in high tech as a Home Video Studio owner.Obviously, Dan isn’t afraid of heights – and his daily discipline to move his business upward is paying off. That’s why Dan Weiniger is April’s Studio Owner of the Month.
Dan, like many of our studio owners, came to Home Video Studio by way of his love for photography and video as a hobby while working in a different field. Although he grew up in New Jersey Weiniger got a degree in finance from Arizona State University and soon found himself owning a seat in the bustling environs of Wall Street and later on the Chicago Board of Options Exchange. How cool is that? Just like the movie Trading Places!
“It was cool,” says Weiniger, “but it was very hectic and, like any other business, a trend started where smaller margins and larger operating costs were making it harder for me to squeeze out a profit and I began to wonder if it was worth it for me.”
Dan’s natural entrepreneurial instincts kicked in another cool direction – literally – and he decided to own and operate a couple of ice cream stores is Florida. But alas, Dan’s financial muse called him back to the business of selling for Northwestern Mutual Life.
Soon after Dan met his wife Jan and they found themselves back in New Jersey and, after the adoption of their daughter, Dan settled in to be a stay-at-home dad and enjoy his family.

As life sometimes goes, however, there was a curve in the plan. Dan found out that he had congestive heart failure and had suffered a heart attack without even knowing it. Upon recovery he made the decision that there would be a few changes in his life. His abiding love of video and photography caused him to enroll in a class in visual communications.
It was in this class that Dan met Pete Gallo, who was in the video services business, was enjoying it and was making good money at home. Pete, one of our very successful studio owners, told Dan about Home Video Studio and soon Dan was on the road to studio ownership.
“I went to Show-N-Tell feeling good about this business,” says Weiniger. “I got a good vibe from Robert’s humility and from the energy of the studio owners that I talked to.”

Dan is now in his eighth month as an owner. His daily diligence, his creativity, his customer service skills, his drive and his sales skills all fuel the stuff that make for a good Home Video Studio owner.
“I like running a successful business and I like being home with my family,” says Weiniger, “that’s why this is a perfect fit for me!”

Here are the FACTS! - Video Preservation:

Facts About VHS, VHS-C, Beta, MiniDV,Hi8,  8mm, and Videotape Preservation.

Video tape rewinding - should always be either totally rewound or totally fast forwarded when being stored.
Video tape storage should be in a reasonable temperature range with little variation, dark, and with low humidity.
Video tape storage - should be stored upright, like books in a book case. It is best to keep tapes in plastic cases in order to minimize exposure to dust.
Videotape preservation - the overall life is limited. There are no definite numbers, but tape life is estimated from 10-30 years depending on storage conditions. Degradation of the image and sound is worse the longer a tape has been in existence.
Video degradation happens. Symptoms of video degradation are static, snow, color loss, general distortion, ghost images, and possibly a total loss of the video. Some of these symptoms can be remedied if the tape is transferred soon enough, but once loss occurs to the source tape, it is permanent.
Videotape transfer, properly done, can save a lot of video/audio and accomplish amazing things. However, the transfer capabilities are limited by the source quality. So the sooner, the better.
Video equipment quality varies greatly. There really IS a difference between consumer video, prosumer video, and professional video equipment.

Richard Rubin is America's favorite geek.

If you call New Jersey native Richard Rubin a geek, he won’t be offended. He was the first runner-up on the reality show Beauty and the Geek in 2005-06, which helped usher him into a career in entertainment. Rubin now performs using his other talents, like playing jazz piano, and he’s done so professionally on Celebrity Cruises and in jazz festivals. And if that’s not enough, his Spanish fluency led him to co-host an Argentinian television show.

Any performer looking for more work needs a demo reel, and for his, Rubin turned to us – Home Video Studios in Westfield.

Rubin, a Native New Jersey performer, appreciated that Dan worked in Westfield and made videos for the New Jersey Table Tennis Club. “I used to play ping pong at the New Jersey Table Tennis Club when I was 13. When I saw this person lived in Westfield, it resonated with me,” said Rubin.

And the experience of creating the demo reel together has been great, says Rubin, noting that Weiniger is not only nice, but also ethical and fair. “He’s not just doing it to collect a paycheck,” Rubin said. “He’s actually interested, and concerned that the project goes off well. He really wants to help you.”

In the demo reel, Weiniger highlights Rubin’s numerous television appearances, including the Tyra Banks Show, Live with Regis & Kathie Lee and Beauty and the Geek, plus his jazz piano performances and the Flor de Palabra game show he co-hosted in Argentina. You can see Richard Rubin’s demo reel on YouTube, under HomeVideoStudio1818’s channel (look for “Richard Rubin Entertainment Reel”).

Negative Space in Photography Composition by r. Bigelow

negative space in photography
"A guy, a girl, and a tractor" captured by Anthony Suffness (Click Image to See More From Anthony Suffness)
This is a compositional technique that can be used to produce eye-catching photos. When properly used, it can help improve your images. Therefore, let’s take a look at the technique?

There are three principal compositional components to a photography image.
  • Frame: The frame is the border that is all around the rest of the image.
  • Positive Space: The subject of the image. This is generally the item on which the camera is focused.
  • Negative Space: The rest of the image. It is located between the positive space and the frame.
When many people go about composing an image, they concentrate their attention on the positive space. The negative space, gets very little thought. If it receives any consideration at all, it is more of an afterthought. This kind of approach can result in second-rate images. When correctly utilized, the negative space can serve two very important functions:
  1. It can help in defining what the positive space is all about. Basically, it helps to tell the story of the positive space.
  2. It can improve the positive space. Essentially, the negative space helps to make the positive space more noticeable.
composition and negative space
"Foggy Day" captured by Miran Kocjancic (Click Image to See More From Miran Kocjancic)
The negative space can serve to help define the positive space by furnishing additional detail. As one example, a photograph may show part of a bridge. However, there may be few details that offer any suggestions of where the bridge is based. Is it in a crowded, urban park or in a forest? We can not tell from the close-up. If the photographer were to show some of the landscape, this would create some negative space that would certainly help to much better define the positive space. As a result, the image would be improved.
While utilizing a negative space can really strengthen an image, there is one thing that must be avoided. The negative space should never be allowed to overwhelm the positive space as this would serve to deteriorate the image.
Making the positive space stick out is the other way that the negative space helps to enhance images. This is accomplished due to the fact the negative space helps to control the attention of a viewer. It does this by helping to lead the viewer’s attention to the positive space. When utilized in this fashion, the negative space is often relatively devoid of detail (this gets rid of any unproductive detail).
In short, both spaces need to be taken into consideration when figuring out how to best compose an image. Basically, both spaces are of equal importance and should be treated as such. This will help improve the quality of the images that you capture.

So, are you geared up to start a photography project? For this project, you should concentrate on capturing images where both spaces have been very carefully thought out. The goal is to carefully think about both spaces before the image is captured. This will require that you previsualize the image. That is, you must imagine what the image will look like before you capture the shot.

For this project, try capturing images of various types of subject matter. For instance, you could take shots in your garden, the city, a local park, and a national park.

This writing discussed one skill that can be used to launch a photography project. However, there are many more ideas that can help you improve your photography. Are you ready to check out some more photography ideas
